O radão é um poluente natural que afeta a qualidade do ar interior e a exposição prolongada ao radão no interior de edifícios é a segunda causa de cancro do pulmão, depois do tabaco.
A Engenharia tem um papel essencial na resolução desta problemática, quer no âmbito da prevenção ao radão e quer na remediação dos edifícios. As diversas valências nas áreas do desenvolvimento de novos materiais de construção, na ventilação, bem como nas soluções construtivas, são determinantes para encontrar soluções com uma boa relação custo-benefício.
O Plano Nacional para o Radão que está a ser elaborado pela Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA) contemplará estratégias para prevenir a penetração de radão nos novos edifícios bem como estratégias corretivas pós-construção.
